On Friday September 27th, 70 golfers converged on the Cottesmore
Golf and Country Club in Crawley, Sussex for the 5th Annual
William Wates Memorial Golf Day. The weather was perfect and
the golf....well that's another story.
We coincided our shot gun start with the commencement of
the Ryder Cup and that's where any comparison with that competition
ends. Having said that we did give Andy Wates the nickname
"tiger" but that was only because he spent so much
time looking for his balls in the "woods".
In other notable performances Tony Smart was caught by the
marshalls
( Grandma and Sarah Wates ) attempting to play a 9 iron from
half way up a fir tree and Jim Tilbury almost embedded his
golf club in Michael Prideaux's
head. Well they do say that "iron Mike always has golf
on the brain."
There were, of course, some great performances and in a tense
finale Matthew Rogerson's team won the day with an impressive
92 points. Congratulations to them! Not far behind in 2nd
place were Rory Watson's "young guns" from Radley
who will be looking for revenge next year. Bringing up the
rear this year were "tail end Charlie" and his trusty
companions Andy and Paul. I will withold their surname for
sensitivity reasons although I can reveal it rhymes with "Gates".
The main objective of the day was, of course, to remember
Will and to raise
funds for his Memorial Trust. I am delighted to say that we
raised £3250.00.
A huge thank you to Peter Stone who so kindly donated a weeks
cruise on his beautiful yacht which raised money for the Trust
through an auction on the day. This raised a substantial amount
and was an extremely generous gesture. Thank you also to John
Perry who outbid everyone for for a weeks holiday at our family
home in Provence. This also raised a great deal of money for
the trust. Have a great time!
The day would not be possible without the cooperation of
Cottesmore Golf and Country Club. Matthew Rogerson plays a
vital part in negotiating an
excellent rate for us so a big thank you to him and all the
staff who did
such a great job for us. Final thank yous to Svea, Carol and
Sonia for their
administrative support and to all of the players and supporters
for making
the day such a fun way to remember Will.
