We are a social enterprise delivering a range of cultural services focusing on sports and arts. As a charitable company our surplus profits are reinvested to improve the quality of facilities and services to benefit all of Bromley’s residents. In 2008 BMT developed an innovative project called ‘ArtsTrain’ which engages and develops the most ‘at risk’ young people within the borough.

The project will transform the social and cultural landscape for young people in the most deprived areas within Bromley by increasing young people’s aspirations, self-esteem and life skills.

The project will provide targeted free programmes in the very heart of these young people’s communities therefore reducing travel, cost and confidence barriers, which prevent many young people from engaging with activities and services. Multi-agency working between our statutory and third sector partner agencies such as; Youth Service, Affinity Sutton Housing, Schools and the Youth Offending Team will ensure that early identification and intervention will be provided for young people who need our support.

Arts Train:

• Provides open access community music technology/MCing/ DJing/ Singing and dance sessions
• Offers of nationally recognised accreditations in music and dance.
• Delivers a structured volunteering/assistant tutor programme (Building the project’s sustainability).
• Hosts business training programmes, giving young people career advice and development pathways.
• Provides performance opportunities through Big Dance, London Jazz Festival and many more partnerships. These events allow the young people to showcase their talent and raise a positive profile for young people in London.

Early Intervention Project. The project provides targeted support and intervention for young people who are in trouble with the law and/or at risk of serious crime and anti-social behaviour, including those at ‘risk of serious harm to others’ through youth violence. In addition it specifically addresses the needs of young people in receipt of a ‘final warning’ or ‘police reprimand’.

The project reduces offending, including reoffending, by enabling young people to reflect, develop and agree their own short and long term goals. They are provided with practical skills to prevent relapse and develop coping strategies in order to ‘stay on track’. It supports them to address patterns of crime and harm caused by anti-social behaviour and to develop ideas and activities appropriate to their needs and those of others in similar circumstances.

Friendship Works provides long-term, one-to-one adult volunteer mentors to vulnerable children. The children we support are aged 5-16 on referral and growing up in disadvantaged environments in the London Boroughs of Camden, Islington and Southwark. They are referred because their Social Worker, school, support organisation or parent has identified a lack of stable, consistent and positive adult support in their life. We address this by recruiting, training and supporting adult volunteers who can act as long-term mentors and friends to these children and make a real change in their lives.

Our volunteer mentors are passionate about helping children and commit to weekly outings with the child they support for at least 2 years. To support this, our team of specialist Caseworkers strive to recruit well-suited volunteers, achieve a high-quality match between each mentor and child, and to prepare, train and support volunteers for the duration of their volunteering role.

Our Caseworkers are central to our service and ensure that our volunteers, children and families are supported throughout their initial 2 years with us and beyond. We currently have a team of 4 full-time and 4 part-time Caseworkers who are supporting over 100 mentor and children matches between them as well as screening, recruiting and training up to 12 volunteers each per month and providing support to the families of our children. However, we also have a waiting list of over 80 children who are in desperate need of support from reliable, consistent and positive adult role models in their lives.

In order to be able to continue delivering our service at a high quality, we need to retain and develop our Casework team’s capacity. All of our salaries are based on the pay scales set by the National Joint Council (NJC) for Local Government Services and are in line with the sector – our current full-time caseworker salary stands at £36,443.

The William Wates Memorial Trust granted £10,000 towards the salary and on-costs of a specialist Caseworker team.

The project supports young people who are not engaged by other voluntary or statutory sector support programs. The project supports young people who are at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or likely to be influenced by negative peer groups. The project works in Tower Hamlets, one of the most deprived boroughs in the country according to government research carried out & the national deprivation index. Young people experience multiple deprivations such as overcrowding, low educational attainment, youth unemployment, drugs, crime and poverty. The project supports young people by providing a safe environment for them to socialise & learn including peer to peer engagement & mentoring along with using sports activities as the main teaching tool. The project works with young people aged from 11-19 years old.

The aim of the project is to develop personal, social, physical and educational potential of young people through programmes of sports and social activities. To establish efficient and constructive networking with agencies and other professional bodies to provide information, advice & guidance for young people on employment, education, training, sports and other activities. The project has been working with the councils’ PAYP (Positive Activities for Young People) programme during the school holiday periods to continue its work & provide further learning & leisure opportunities for young people to get involved in.

Launched in 2003, Tender brings a unique preventative approach to the issues of violence and abuse in young people’s relationships.

Launched in 2003, Tender brings a unique preventative approach to the issues of violence and abuse in young people’s relationships. We use our expertise in drama and the arts to engage disadvantaged young people and to challenge hardened attitudes of tolerance to violence.

Our projects train young people to become peer-educators and Youth Ambassadors, empowering them to actively promote healthy relationships in their peer-groups, families and communities. We also work at an institutional level to embed sustainable violence prevention in whole schools, youth centres and pupil referral units across Greater London.

Ultimately, Tender seeks to:

• Change young people’s attitudes towards abusive relationships, increasing their awareness and empowering them to not resort to violence and to step away from it when directed towards them
• Reduce the incidents of domestic and sexual violence
• Enable an integrated classroom approach to teaching violence in relationship issues and encouraging preventative measures
• Gain official recognition of the importance of violence prevention work with young people for promoting healthy relationships, embodied in its inclusion within the National Curriculum

Young people are involved in all aspects of Tender’s planning, from the level of our projects through to representation on our board.

The project is based in Southampton where there is a high level of deprivation. Children and young people live in families, which are chaotic in nature, where there is a history of generational unemployment and where parents/carers do not have the skills needed to engage with their children in a positive manner, and manage their behaviour and their needs.

Children and young people in these families have low aspirations, with little value placed on education either by them or their parents/carers. From an early age these children are disadvantaged in terms of learning basic social skills many of us take for granted. Parents/carers in many cases do not play with their children or interact with them in a way that encourages their social development.

Many parents/carers face significant issues themselves including low self-esteem, lack of confidence, money worries and poor education.

The Impact Project supports both children/young people and their parents to overcome the issues of

• After school activity club where young people can engage with a range of activities that enhances both their social skills and their attainment, whilst building self-esteem and self-confidence.
• Homework support for young people who are struggling to complete work set. If young people do not have homework they can come and read with support workers.
• Support for older young people to access education, employment and training opportunities
• Support for parents to deal with practical issues around debt, benefit, employment and training.
• Support for parents around behaviour management, setting boundaries and positive interaction with their children.
• Family days where parents and their children engage with a range of activities that allow them to play together, from board games to walks in the New Forest.
• Acting as advocates for parents and children/young people in dealing with statutory bodies involved in their lives such as schools and social workers.
• Encourage mutual support networks between families.
• Support families to access other services available to deal with specific issues beyond the skills of Youth Options.

Street League provides them with an opportunity to engage in a structured football project in the first crucial week after release. Participants that show promise get selected to join the eight week ‘Employability Academy’ and 72% of these end up in sustained employment or education.

The project is run by the Hackney Music Development Trust (winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Education).

Shadowball is an inspiring national initiative, because it uses the arts to break down complex barriers of racial prejudice and exclusion, de-motivation and lack of role models, but also offers the most disadvantaged young people rare opportunities to develop training skills in this team building sport, leading to self-sustaining school and community leagues.

WWMT supported the Hackney Music Development Trust £15,000 towards the costs of this high quality project.

It is an umbrella organisation and represents 42 football teams from Tower Hamlets and neighbouring boroughs. BFA organises football leagues and tournaments for the local community at local, regional and national level. It supports member teams with capacity building to enable them to develop and provide better services to their users.

WWMT has donated £4500 to help the formation of a new youth league in Tower Hamlets.

The new league will be called ‘Tower Hamlets Youth League’ and will encompass U10’s, U12’s U14’s, U16’s and U18’s age groups. They aim to attract 10 teams in each of the age groups and the matches will be played every Saturday.

The Discover project takes young people who are underachieving at school and suffering from low self esteem and provides them with alternative educational opportunities that boost self confidence.

They allow the young people to have control over their own education (and, in turn, their lives). This is done by providing a range of short education/personal development projects, the subject of each decided on by the young people themselves.
