This represented total funding of £10,000.

As a result of this success we have committed a further total of £54,000 over 3 years to support the salary of the Course Director. This donation has contributed to the continuity, strength, cohesion and confidence of the operation. It has also freed up time for Chris Hall to devote to the day to day operation of the London Boxing Academy.

Based in Tottenham, the London Boxing Academy uses boxing as a way to entice children with a bad track record at school back into the classroom. In addition to boxing and sport the London Boxing Academy mainly teach English and Maths and also various vocational subjects on demand.

These are youngsters whose parents have abandoned them.

WWMT has donated a total of £30,000 over three years to transform the way that the charity delivers football to it’s young people. The idea being that a defined football programme will allow them to be involved in a structured project, which will be the antithesis of the chaos that pervades their lives.

Not only will the participants be part of a team that they can be proud of but they will also gain football coaching accreditation that they can use in their own communities.

The project is run by the Hackney Music Development Trust (winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Education).

Shadowball is an inspiring national initiative, because it uses the arts to break down complex barriers of racial prejudice and exclusion, de-motivation and lack of role models, but also offers the most disadvantaged young people rare opportunities to develop training skills in this team building sport, leading to self-sustaining school and community leagues.

WWMT supported the Hackney Music Development Trust £15,000 towards the costs of this high quality project.

Montage’s community acting, singing and dancing classes were established in 1999 when Judy Gordon, an experienced teacher and performer, identified a need for classes for children and adults who did not want to work towards exams but valued the structure of a carefully planned curriculum with the emphasis on technique.

The acquisition of skills has a dramatic effect on confidence and self-esteem, and working in a group offers opportunities for friendships based on shared interests. Children’s attitudes to learning can be transformed and the classes offer a gateway into the joy of performance. Every opportunity for the students to perform for an audience on stages in a variety of professional and community settings is eagerly seized.

This is a brick wall with different coloured lines drawn on it that represent different sporting targets.

Targets include; goal posts and tennis nets; cricket stumps and plastic panels built into the wall to help aiming skills; sections of angled brick deflect balls at odd angles. There are also basketball and netball rings.

The wall is placed in the middle of the playground to enable more than one activity to be played at once. It is also almost indestructible.

This wall aims to encourage youngsters to engage in sporting activities by offering them a wide range of sports to choose from at only the cost of their raw materials – footballs, tennis balls etc.

It satisfied our requirements for a sustainable sporting project aimed at getting kids off the streets.

The foundation gave £25,000 which paid for the whole project.

The William Wates Memorial Trust was delighted to be able to donate £5490 to Oval House, Arts in education. Oval House, which is based in Kennington, London.

The William Wates Memorial Trust was delighted to be able to donate £5490 to Oval House, Arts in education. Oval House, which is based in Kennington, London, develops programmes to provide a safe space for young people to play, explore, learn and develop as responsible citizens. Oval House has a long history of using participatory drama to stimulate meaningful debate and empower young people to take responsibility in their lives.

The donation is specifically aimed at a Citizenship programme called “Me, Myself and Them”. This programme responds to the real needs for Oval House participants to address issues that impact and shape their lives. The workshops have been designed around scenarios and issues that they themselves have identified as being “problematic”. The workshops touch students on a personal level and provoke a social response.

The programme will be offered to all Lambeth and Southwark students aged 13-17 years and will aim to benefit up to 450 young people. Workshops tackle issues such as Racism and identity, Peer pressure and Crime and Justice.

The donation will go towards development time, tutor preparation, tutor training, workshop fees, workshop materials and ongoing evaluation of the course. In all there will be over 30 workshops run by 3 tutors. Importantly this is a sustainable project and the tutors skills can be carried forward into additional projects.

We are delighted to report that pre-bookings for this course have already attracted a great deal of interest and that it is likely that more than 30 workshops will be required.

For further information please have a look at the Oval House website www.ovalhouse.com or contact Jan Sharkey-Dodds on 0207 582 6279.

Update

We are delighted to report that this project was an overwhelming success.

The target was to deliver up to 30 programmes to a total of 450 students. However due to demand 37 programmes were run and 555 students participated. The age range of the students that took part ranged from 12-17 years with students coming from 5 local schools and from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

A youth worker from Lambeth College described the project as:

“Very emotional and motivational work. It helped my students gain confidence and was a very good workshop”.

This was a project that we were delighted to associate Will’s name with.

The role of the centre is to develop in young people self confidence and self esteem that leads to improved attitude towards learning. The focus of the centre is to facilitate improved attainment in literacy, numeracy and information communication technology.

The William Wates Memorial Trust supported this project by funding the mini bus and driver supplied by the Community transport of Hammersmith and Fulham. The total funding required was £6,200.00. This support enabled the centre to collect young people from across the Borough from their school and then return them to the school following the sessions within the centre.

This escort service has proved a very important factor in maintaining the numbers of students that attend the centre, allowing equal access for all young people regardless of proximity to the centre.
