QCCA runs a variety of activities and sessions over three sites.

Activities and sessions range between educational programmes such as ICT and ESOL, health programmes such as gym sessions and exercise classes and social cohesion programmes such as Luncheon club and crèche. QCCA also has equipment and hall hire services. And also holds social events such as excursions, residentials and festivals for the community members.

“There is lots happening in the youth club and it means we don’t have to stay on the street… Some of us don’t go school or college so need to get qualifications to get jobs, and the youth workers are always helping keep us out of trouble. I want to become a youth worker so I volunteer as well”

It is run pre-dominantly by volunteers and operates across London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Newark’s aim is to develop the personal, social, physical and educational potential of young people through the provision of recreational sports activities and youth work.

Newark received a grant of £5000 towards core costs. In 2012 this meant that it was able to expand its services – three leadership programmes (attended by thirty people in total), it also created two new youth clubs in Bethnal Green – one exclusively for young women. The popularity of their Friday evening youth club led to an additional session on Saturday mornings. This is a great example of a small charity doing great work for little money in a local area… and making a big difference.

They have been awarded the Approved Provider Standard by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation and in 2007 we received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of their achievements and their ability to change the lives of children through friendship.

They believe that every child deserves a supportive childhood and the chance to fulfill their potential. They want to help to embed mentoring at the heart of communities and enable all children to benefit from caring, consistent adult support. They got a grant of £10,000 towards the salary of a lead mentor.

This is a project that teaches Transcendental Meditation in schools. The project we support is a pilot to show educators, schools, authorities and parents in the South East that “tinkering around the edges” is no longer valid when it comes to disadvantaged children who have been failing in our schools.

Our grant will be used to deliver Transcendental Meditation to two schools in Sussex (Cornfield, Littlehampton and Worthing High School). Thirty-five students in each school will benefit and the project will run for six months.

The Quiet Time team will teach both teachers and pupils the simple natural technique of Transcendental Meditation so that twice daily. These 10-15 minute Quiet Time sessions will be evaluated over six months by Brighton and Sussex Medical School measuring improvements in, engagement with teaching, mental stability, improved behaviour and improved learning.

The total cost of delivering this project in schools was £19,870. And there was also the academic research side to the project being undertaken to evaluate the changes in the students during the intervention.

We felt that this project was so interesting that we spoke to The Ronald Wates Foundation (named after Will’s grandfather) and the Wates Family Enterprise Trust (the Charity arm of the Wates Group) and between us we have been able to cover all the costs of the project. We plan to do more of this leveraging in the future. We wait with anticipation for the results.

This work is relatively new to the UK but here is a US website with more information – http://www.tm.org/benefits-classroom

The young people they support are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and have a commercial ‘bright idea’ for a business. They help young people by supporting their business on a commercial basis with start up finance, advice and guidance, providing business lessons that will stay with them through their lives.

In 2010/11 BIT received about 1000 applications for support, ran business readiness workshops for 200 people, helped a further 300 with business guidance and continued to invest in the 28 businesses on their books.
Bright Ideas Trust received a grant of £22,000 over three years (subject to results).

The project addresses the wider learning needs of the pupils helping them develop reasoning and questioning skills. It also uses “Restorative Approaches to help build relationships between students who are involved in bullying or gang behaviour.

This project will provide young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with a dedicated volunteer who will meet with them weekly to help with their homework and learning.

The project will engage with young people living in very low-income households, many associated with chaotic lifestyles and drug use. These children will be provided with a quiet, encouraging space to work on their homework, aided by volunteers who can provide individual support and attention they need.

The Homework Club will allow young people to get individual academic support in either a group environment or on their own. Their aim is that 50 young children will take advantage of this opportunity.

Positive help is a charity based in Edinburgh that was proposed to us by a Tour de Force rider. It is one of a small number of pilot projects we are supporting that are ‘sponsored’ by Tour de Force riders and fit all our criteria apart from Geography.

WCYP Achieve works with young people struggling at school with the following projects:

Attendance project at the local primary school: This project targets work with children with attendance primarily between 80 and 85%, offering a programme of group work, incentives and family support to address the issues causing low attendance and raise it above the 85% before it becomes a serious problem. They work with young people in school, but also encourage them to attend after school provision, which is long term.
Mentoring Project: Their one-to-one mentoring project works with 6-12 individuals mostly aged 13-16 on the verge of exclusion or school refusal. Each individual receives weekly sessions with their mentor and regular reviews of their progress.

Positive Achievement Group: In partnership with the local secondary school, this project identifies 10-12 young people (aged 13-15) with issues affecting their attendance and or behaviour at school and provides a target based group work programme one morning per week designed to raise aspirations and improve behaviour and engagement.

Current activities include access to games consoles, table tennis, IT learning centre, arts and crafts as well as information on matters such as sexual health, drugs and alcohol in a safe and welcoming environment.

The delivery of TGI Activities has resulted in attracting young people who had not or could not, due to territorial issues, use the services of the Project. To enable them to meet the growing needs and demands of Young People living in the Gorbals and peripheral areas it is necessary to increase their levels of engagement throughout the area.

By supporting this project the WWMT allowed Gorbals Youth Café to extend their frontline services to offer new opportunities to Young People by delivering initiatives focused on empowerment and inclusion.
